Derniers vétérans diplômés d’une formation en électricité

Les centres de formation de l'industrie électrique de l'Alberta sont une initiative de la Fraternité internationale des ouvriers en électricité (IBEW), section locale 424 et de l'Association des entrepreneurs en électricité de l'Alberta (ECAA).

The Electrical Industry Training Centres of Alberta is an initiative of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 424 and the Electrical Contractors Association of Alberta (ECAA).

150 kilomètres pour la collecte de fonds

Félicitations et remerciement aux vétérans Glen Coyle et Christian Bagley, tous deux anciens membres du RCR, pour leur campagne de financement en faveur de l’organisation Du Régiment aux Bâtiments. Une présentation s’est tenue à l'hôtel de ville de Toronto lors de la Semaine du Souvenir 2020 en compagnie de Normand Trépanier, du programme Du Régiment aux Bâtiments. Les deux anciens soldats ont marché 150 km et ont amassé à ce jour un peu plus de 20 000$ afin de soutenir les soldats qui font la transition vers une carrière dans les métiers de la construction via le programme Du Régiment aux Bâtiments.

L'Ontario aide les anciens combattants à se lancer dans de nouvelles carrières

Le gouvernement de l'Ontario investit 511 100 dollars dans le nouveau programme Pathways to Post-Military Employment (une passerelle vers l'emploi dans la vie civile) pour aider 180 anciens combattants et réservistes à se réinsérer dans la vie civile. Géré par l'organisme à but non lucratif Du régiment aux bâtiments, ce programme aidera les vétérans à mettre à profit leurs compétences et leur expérience uniques afin de trouver de bons emplois dans le secteur de la construction.

Le premier ministre Doug Ford était accompagné aujourd'hui du ministre du Travail, de la Formation et du Développement des compétences, Monte McNaughton, et du ministre des Finances, Rod Phillips, pour fournir des détails sur cette initiative au centre de formation Interior Finishing Systems à Woodbridge.

« Pendant la semaine du Souvenir, nous rendons hommage aux hommes et femmes en uniforme qui ont quitté leur famille pour défendre notre pays et protéger les valeurs qui nous sont chères, a déclaré le premier ministre Ford. Aujourd'hui, de nombreux vétérans rencontrent des difficultés au moment de quitter le service actif et de réintégrer la vie civile. Le moment est venu de leur fournir le soutien dont ils ont besoin pour se préparer à une nouvelle carrière bien rémunérée et gratifiante afin qu'ils puissent eux aussi contribuer à la reprise économique de l'Ontario. »

Le programme Pathways to Post-Military Employment proposera aux candidats un jumelage avec des employeurs du secteur de la construction, leur permettra d'obtenir une évaluation officielle de leurs compétences et favorisera la formation en milieu de travail. Il créera des débouchés pour les anciens combattants et les réservistes dans plusieurs domaines, notamment les métiers spécialisés, la gestion, l'administration, la planification et la programmation, la logistique, la sécurité, l'ingénierie et la comptabilité.

OCS donates $100,000 to help provide opportunities in the trades for veterans

On behalf of building trade construction unions and contractor partners, the Ontario Construction Secretariat donated $100,000 to assist Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) aid in streamlining the pathways to apprenticeships, advanced training and career placement opportunities in the construction industry for the men and women who have served our country. Helmets to Hardhats is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting veterans who are transitioning from military service, and active reservists, into second careers in the skilled trades.

“Veterans, reservists and senior cadets are an invaluable asset to the skilled trades and we are delighted to be able to donate $100,000 on behalf of building trade construction unions and their contractor partners working in the industrial, commercial, and institutional sector,” Joe Keyes, OCS President of the Board of Directors, says. “The Helmets to Hardhats organization is providing opportunities to military men and women who served Canada with distinction as they transition to civilian life,” he continues.

Brent Dewell, Carpenters Local 27, is just one example of how H2H has helped our veterans. Mr. Dewell is a Field Engineer in the Canadian Military and has always been interested in carpentry but never knew how to approach it. He decided to call a union representative from Local 27, who was also a veteran, and explained to him how his skills would transfer into the trades. Mr. Dewell was quickly put in touch with H2H and has been working as a carpentry apprentice, since April, with a schedule that allows him time to spend with his family and make a great income.

Un nouveau partenariat stratégique avec VETS Canada

Du Régiment aux Bâtiments est heureux d'annoncer un nouveau partenariat stratégique avec les Services de transition d'urgence des vétérans (VETS Canada) qui se traduira par de meilleures conditions pour les vétérans en situation itinérances et/ou en crise. Le DRB travaillera avec les vétérans identifiés par VETS Canada pour faciliter la transition vers des carrières bien rémunérées et hautement qualifiées dans le secteur de la construction et les industries connexes.

« Le DRB attend avec impatience ce partenariat très positif avec l'intention d'aider des personnes très dignes, » a ajouté M. Joe Maloney, directeur exécutif national Du Régiment aux Bâtiments Canada. « Nous voulons nous assurer que tous les vétérans sont au courant de ce qui est disponible via le DRB et qu'aucun vétéran n'est laissé pour compte. »

Nous n’offrons plus seulement un lit chaud, des repas chauds et un endroit où loger, en partenariat avec Du Régiment aux Bâtiments, nous pouvons dès maintenant accompagner les Vétérans dans l’apprentissage de nouvelles habiletés pour leur permettre de retourner sur le marché du travail.

Les Vétérans sans-abri ont servi leur pays et il est de notre devoir de ne pas les laisser tomber. Ils doivent recevoir tous les services dont ils ont besoin pour se sortir de la rue. Reservist turned carpenter hands in the tools to help at LTC home

When carpenter and active military reservist Dimitrij Berdnikov was asked by the Canadian Armed Forces to volunteer in the military’s initiative Operation LASER to assist in a troubled long-term care home during the pandemic in the Greater Toronto Area, the 28-year-old was quick to sign up.

Berdnikov is a member of Carpenters’ Local 27 in Toronto.

In 2016, after four years in the military reserves, he was looking at career options and the building trades was on his list.

Through the Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) program, he met carpenter Mike Humphries, a Local 27 business representative and its liaison to the H2H.

“I didn’t know anything about carpentry at the time but thought I’d give it a try and I have liked it ever since,” says Berdnikov.

Letter from VAC to Helmets to Hardhats

Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has launched an online consultation to learn how we can better communicate with and reach out to former Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. The Veteran Community Consultation is geared toward Veterans who do not currently receive benefits and services from VAC.

It is important that all former military members are aware of the benefits and services that VAC offers, and how to access those supports, even years after release. The findings of this consultation will help us improve the way we communicate with Veterans to better meet your needs.

The online consultation will run until the end of March. In-person discussion groups will be organized in communities across Canada this spring.

Re: “Let the markets handle the skilled-trades labour shortage” (Jan. 24) I must take issue with the author’s criticism of the Ontario government’s active promotion of skilled trades apprenticeships for young people. We are indeed facing a shortage of skilled tradespeople, as baby boomers — well trained and well paid — are retiring from industry. Leaving aside Mr Lau’s inapt and cynical comparison of skilled workers to oranges and pears, it seems he would “just...let the markets work,” and have them replaced by unapprenticed, semi-skilled, low-paid workers, in another example of the “race to the bottom” in both skills and wages. My organization assists armed forces veterans in transitioning into the skilled trades. We have no intention of sending these people into inadequately trained jobs where they can be exploited by employers favouring cheap labour over fully qualified workers. Our veterans deserve a better future, and so do our youth. Labour Minister Monte McNaughton should be applauded for encouraging young people to enter the skilled trades through proper apprenticeships. Engaging skilled workers in industry requires regulation, certification, intensive training, and licensing. It requires a tripartite partnership of government, organized labour, and industry, for the sake of safety, quality, and fair compensation. Reaching out to youth, who may otherwise be unfamiliar with apprenticeship opportunities — and the “fruit”-ful jobs they promise — is a good move by this government. Skilled labour isn’t cheap, and cheap labour isn’t skilled.
